Pamela Jean or PJ, the awkward looking, quiet quite sociopathic main character, she is one that I would equate to a urban Sybil, sans the schizophrenia. The Ruthless Pamela Jean is a tumultuous journey of self discovery, resilience and refinement. Ruthless Pamela Jean is packed full to the brim with drama, romance and plenty of high-stakes action, this is a book you’ll want to devour in one sitting. I don’t want to share too much about the plot here because it sure is a rollercoaster of a ride that I implore you to experience for yourself, but I will say that regardless of your preferred genre you’re sure to find something in here to love.
Mitchell’s handing of this is to be hugely commended, and her writing throughout was a joy to read. The plot itself, which sees Pamela Jean grow from a young girl into a strong businesswoman with plenty of obstacles to overcome along the way, is thrilling in its own right, but the ongoing inclusion of the heavier themes really helped to enhance my reading experience and help me to connect with our protagonist on a deeper level. While I was certainly left with plenty to think about, I really appreciated how Mitchell didn’t let such topics and discussions overtake the novel or become heavy-handed in any way. Placing emphasis on issues such as race and bullying, Carol Denise Mitchell is not afraid to confront heavy – and at times rather difficult to read – topics that really delve deep into the raw human experience.
Ultimately, Ruthless Pamela Jean is an examination of what it means to be human, how to succeed against all odds and break free from the confines of society. If you’re looking for a fast-paced and action-packed thrill of a read that will stay with you long after completing the last page, then you need look no further – Ruthless Pamela Jean is the book you must add to your reading list immediately! Difficult to read in places but extremely eye-opening, and with a morally grey protagonist at its heart (ruthless she most certainly is!), this is a novel that will have you gripped from beginning to end.
