The average academic writes in ways that makes us want to stab ourselves in the head. The problem with the likes of Miranda and McCullough is that they write plays and books in ways that people enjoy. They don’t like author David McCullough for the same reason, and his research is brilliant. I replied, “I love it! If it has you all talking about Alexander Hamilton and the American Revolution, I love it!” I meant it, but I’m an anomaly.Īcademics wouldn’t be happy with Hamilton if Miranda read 100 “approved” books on the subject, then proceeded to give a boring historiographical lecture. I’ll admit, I didn’t weigh in on this until 2018, when asked by a college freshman what I thought about "Hamilton." I hadn’t seen the play, nor heard the music (I’m a 62-year-old Beatles fan).
